Positive Self Management Programme
02 Oct 08This Autumn Waverley Care is launching a new course called the Positive Self Management Programme or PSMP, a seven week self-management programme for people living with HIV.
The programme has been researched and run over the last ten to fifteen years in both the United States and UK as well as in parts of Asia and Africa, and has proved very successful in terms of building people’s confidence to use their own skills and knowledge to manage their emotional and physical health. Waverley Care is the first organisation to introduce the programme to Scotland and we are planning to start the course in November.
The course provides participants with practical everyday skills and techniques which allow them to manage their physical, mental and emotional health.
Topics covered will include
- confidence building
- dealing with difficult emotions
- developing coping strategies
- relaxation techniques
- physical activity and exercise
- communication skills
- goal-setting
- action-planning
- problem-solving
- healthy eating
- issues around medication, treatment and symptoms
The tools participants learn can enable them to achieve personal goals, control their symptoms and plan for the future.
HOW IS THE COURSE RUN?
The PSMP consists of seven weekly sessions of two and a half hours each. Sessions are run by two trained facilitators, one of whom is living with HIV.
The course is delivered in a supportive group environment which allows participants to meet other people facing similar challenges. Through discussion and information-sharing participants develop the knowledge and confidence to make better informed decision about managing their condition and lifestyle.
WHO IS THE COURSE FOR?
The PSMP is for anyone living with HIV. It is run in countries around the world and has proved useful both for people who are newly diagnosed and those that that have been living with HIV for a number of years.
