Do you know anyone who has been living with HIV for a long time?

20 Oct 09

The National Long Term Survivors Group for people living with HIV organises four "Living Proof" weekend retreats per year. The weekends provide a safe, relaxed place to meet other people who have also been living with HIV and AIDS for five or more years.

The programme of activities on each weekend and includes group workshops, one-to-one counselling, complementary therapies and a range of social networking opportunities. The weekends are user lead and members are encouraged to make their own choices relating to their own level of participation in the weekend; members are not pressurised to participate as it is entirely up to each person to decide whether they take part in these activities or not. Many members find that the networking opportunities and ability to talk freely about HIV, as well as many other issues, provide the greatest benefit.

The Group has been awarded a 3 year grant by the Elton John AIDS Foundation to help combat and challenge social isolation in people who have been HIV positive for longer than five years and who are unable to access local support. To be eligible for a fully funded weekend you should not have attended a weekend before and be:
• 50 years old or more, or
• Socially isolated on account of living in a rural location, low HIV prevalence area or otherwise unable to use local support services, or
• A worker (paid or volunteer) in the HIV support sector
