New condoms by post scheme

22 Feb 11

A new scheme has been launched in Highland, Argyll and Bute to provide free condoms by post.

The scheme is a new initiative aimed at preventing the spread of HIV.

Unprotected sex is now the largest single risk factor in the transmission of HIV. Practising safe sex and using condoms is the best way to reduce the risk of HIV infection. Although there have been great improvements in the treatment of HIV and, with the right medication, people living with HIV can expect a long life, it remains a very serious condition with a profound effect on people’s quality of life.

In its early stages, HIV infection is often without symptoms. One in four people with HIV have no idea that they are infected so, without the use of condoms, there is a real risk that they will unknowingly pass on the infection to their partners. Giving people access to condoms is a very important way of helping prevent the spread of the HIV virus.

It is not always easy to obtain condoms, particularly for those living in remote areas. Buying condoms in the local village shop compromises people’s confidentiality. Young people in particular might be cautious about purchasing condoms in public. The scheme will target those who are most at risk of HIV infection.

The condoms by post scheme is funded by NHS Highland through its contract with Waverley Care and condoms can be ordered from Waverley Care at their offices at 34 Waterloo Place, Inverness or call 01463 711585 . Supplies are posted out, free of charge, every month in plain wrappers so the service is completely confidential.

Go to www.waverleycare.org/condoms to download the order form and find out more about the scheme.
