UK Family Project Report Released
13 Jan 12The UK Family Project have just released a residential report and resources for families living with HIV.
The UK Family Project is a collaborative initiative between Positive Parenting and Children London, Belfast Health and Social Care Trust and Waverley Care. The project was funded by Elton John AIDS Foundation.
The aims of the project were:
- to reduce the impact of secrecy and stigma on families living with HIV
- to facilitate more comprehensive and earlier testing for undiagnosed children
- to improve family communication on HIV, sex and relationships
- to ensure that families receive support using the best possible practice models and methods.
The aims were achieved through a number of UK wide activities and developments including 2 family residentials, an event for practitioners in partnership with CHIVA and establishing a network of social care practitioners.
As well as the residential report Learning from Families living with HIV, which you can download here, the project has produced a series of resources to help families talk to each other about HIV. The series is called 'It's Good2Talk' and has been shaped and informed by parents, young people and practitioners from across the UK.
Waverley Care's Children and Families Worker, Lynne Williamson, has been involved with the project for 2 years and said,
"It's been an amazing experience working on this project. It was great to be able to facilitate some of the test groups and see first hand the way the resources could change the way parents thought about talking to their children about HIV."
