Promoting Testing at Pride

A busy summer of Pride events, celebrating Scotland’s LGBT community, continues over the weekend, with festivities in Edinburgh and the Isle of Bute – and Waverley Care will be part of both.

Edinburgh Pride takes place on Saturday 16 June with a march setting off from the Scottish Parliament at 11am and ending up in Bristo Square.

Volunteers and staff from our SX project, which works with gay and bisexual men, will be joining the march, before hosting a stall offering free condoms and a range of information, advice and support around sexual health and wellbeing.

In a first for Pride, we are also teaming up with Edinburgh Youth Stop AIDS and NHS Lothian’s ROAM Outreach team to offer free, confidential and fast HIV testing.

If you’re heading to Pride, you’ll find the SX team in the Potterrow Dome – come and say hello.

Meanwhile, over on Bute, the town of Rothesay will host the first ever LGBT Pride event on a Scottish island! Our Argyll and Bute team will be there for the whole weekend, speaking to people about our work and offering information, advice and support about HIV and sexual health.

Throughout the weekend, we will also be offering our Rapid HIV Testing service, which provides free, confidential testing. If you’d like to find out more about testing, you can get in touch with Amanda on 07703 379090, or email Amanda.Scott@waverleycare.org.

At both Pride events, we’ll be speaking to people about the importance of regular HIV testing for people who are at risk, and how knowing your status can help you take control of your health. We’ll also be highlighting the effectiveness of HIV treatment and the idea of U=U.

U=U stands for Undetectable equals Untransmittable, and refers to the clear evidence that a person living with HIV, who is on treatment with an undetectable viral load, cannot pass HIV on to their sexual partners. It is a really strong message that we want to share to help reduce the fear and stigma that is sometimes still associated with HIV.

It promises to be a busy, colourful, exciting weekend, and we’d like to take this opportunity to wish everyone attending events across the summer an amazing Pride season.

Details of other Pride events taking place across Scotland can be found here.
