Why did you choose to work for Waverley Care?

Growing up in the 1980s when HIV emerged meant that I was always aware of the condition and always had an interest in the issues for those living with HIV. Waverley Care stood out as a vibrant and dynamic organisation that was doing great work and I wanted to be part of it.

Tell us about life before Waverley Care.

I was born and brought up in Bishopbriggs, Glasgow before moving to Troon where I spent the rest of my childhood. After studying Economics and Politics at Edinburgh University I knew I wanted to have a career that involved helping people rather than going into business. So, after a year being a helper for a disabled student, I trained and qualified as a social worker. I first worked as a children and families social worker before moving into the voluntary sector and working at a charity called Circle where I was Operations Director. My next move was here to Waverley Care.

What do you most enjoy in your job?

I love that service users and volunteers are actually heavily involved in the organisation and I really enjoy getting to know lots of them. Also Waverley Care has a culture of everyone’s ideas being listened to and seriously considered and I want to continue that.

What do you least enjoy?

To be honest, I really enjoy the job and on the whole thrive on the challenges it brings. Like most charities, one of the biggest issues for Waverley Care is around continuing to secure funding for our services. I am confident, however, that we can continue to demonstrate why our services are needed and will stay responsive to changing needs.

What is your favourite food and drink?

Spaghetti bolognaise and a glass of red wine.

Where would we find you on your ideal holiday?

Somewhere warm like Barcelona –  we would eat at some of the fantastic restaurants that we discovered on a previous trip. Coupled with good food would be morning runs in the sun to work off the extra calories.

Who inspires you?

I’m not sure about inspiring me but I’ve been a devoted fan of Blondie and their music since the late ’70s and have never looked back. My partner often says Debbie is the third person in our relationship which tells you something about her place in my life! It’s the combination of killer pop tunes and Debbie being the coolest woman in music.
