Come & Sing the Sound of Music

At the weekend, we were joined by 250 of our Come & Singers at St Cuthbert’s in Edinburgh for a performance of  musical theatre classic – The Sound of Music.

Never in all of our previous Come and Sing events have the printed lyrics seemed as redundant as when the singers belted out the show’s well-known songs.

We were delighted to be joined on the day by conductor, Ben Parry and soprano, Susan Hamilton, who took on the role of Maria.

Ben is the current Director of the National Youth Choirs of Great Britain, and has collaborated on the soundtracks of major films including the Harry Potter and Hobbit franchises. Susan is a noted soloist who has performed at international festivals around the world.

Alongside the musical spectacle, special mention must go to those who participated in the fancy dress competition. We had a fine collection of nuns, lederhosen and dresses made from curtains. The top prize, however, went to someone who thought inside the box. Gillian Torrance came along, dressed as a brown paper package, tied up with string (see above) – definitely one of our favourite things!

Between donations for taking part and collections on the day over £5,365 was raised to support our work.

A big thank you must go to all of our singers, to Ben, Susan and our musicians for lending their considerable talents, to St Cuthbert’s Parish Church for hosting and finally to MHD Law for sponsoring the event.

Fancy getting involved in our next Come & Sing? Susan Hamilton is returning on 3 December to conduct a performance of Handel’s Messiah and a selection if Christmas carols. You can find out more here.
