Become a Befriender

A befriender is a trained volunteer who offers support as a friend in an open, non-judgemental way.

At Waverley Care, if you volunteer as a befriender, you would provide one-to-one support to someone living with HIV or Hepatitis C who may be experiencing isolation.

The time you spend with someone can be wide and varied depending on the needs of the individual you are matched with. It may include meeting for coffee or a meal, going out for a walk, or attending medical or other appointments. Support is usually provided for around 2 hours per week.

Volunteering as a befriender can be very rewarding and include much laughter along the way. You are likely to see the person you support:

Volunteer befrienders receive a full induction, training and ongoing supervision and support.

We’re currently looking for volunteer befrienders in Edinburgh and the Lothians.
