As we get older, our bodies naturally change, and this can affect our health and the way our bodies process medication.

For people living with HIV, ageing can sometimes bring additional factors. But with effective treatment, regular monitoring and the right support, these can be managed.

HIV, ageing and your health

HIV-related inflammation may contribute to the risk of developing some age-related conditions, including cardiovascular disease, bone disease and cognitive impairment.

The good news is that effective HIV treatment and maintaining an undetectable viral load can reduce inflammation and lower the risk of some of these conditions.

HIV and HIV medication are only some of the factors that can affect our health as we age. Lifestyle factors, smoking, substance use and other health conditions, such as diabetes, can also contribute to the risk of developing certain conditions.

Your HIV treatment as you get older

As we age, changes in the body can affect how medicines are processed. As part of your HIV care, your HIV team and GP will carry out regular blood tests to make sure your medication remains appropriate for you.

There are several HIV medications with excellent safety profiles, so if your treatment needs to change, your healthcare team can discuss the options with you.

It’s important to speak to your healthcare provider about your treatment and any changes in your health, so they can make sure you’re on the best treatment for you.

Managing your medications

It’s important that your healthcare team has an up-to-date list of all the medications you’re taking.

Some medications can interact with HIV treatment and medicines used to treat other health conditions. Your healthcare provider can check for potential interactions and make sure your medications are safe to take together.

Regular monitoring and support

Your healthcare team will regularly monitor your health as part of your HIV care. This can help identify any changes and make sure you get the right support or treatment if needed.

Ageing with HIV can sometimes feel complex, but these conditions are manageable and are only one part of the bigger picture of your health.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Support is available.
