Reinforcements called in to help out in Milestone Garden

Soldiers from 3 RIFLES volunteering at Waverley Care Milestone

With falling leaves and the recent wild weather, we were delighted to call in reinforcements this week to help tidy up the grounds at Milestone.

Soldiers from 3rd Battalion The Rifles (3 RIFLES) were volunteering at our Residential and Outreach Support Centre, clearing the car park and unblocking gutters and drains around the grounds.

The group certainly weren’t afraid to get their hands dirty and the difference it has made to the grounds is fantastic.

The Milestone Residential and Outreach Support service provides intensive support for people living with HIV or Hepatitis C.  The service helps some people to leave hospital early while in many cases it can help people avoid being admitted to hospital in the first place, benefiting the people involved and saving the NHS money.

Part of the approach at Milestone is to create a fun, relaxed atmosphere to help service users’ physical, emotional and mental health.  Access to the gardens is a big part of this and the work done by volunteers, including the team from 3 RIFLES, helps to ensure that the space is well maintained.

3 RIFLES are based at the nearby Dreghorn Barracks and their stint volunteering at Milestone is part of a week of planned volunteering with local community groups.  It is an absolutely fantastic way to help strengthen the community and we’d like to say a big thank you to all of the soldiers who helped out.

Throughout the year we have opportunities for organisations to get involved in volunteering. If you work for an organisation that supports charity volunteering and fundraising, you can get in touch with us to find out how to get involved. Call our Corporate Fundraiser Ewan on 0131 556 9710.
