Residential weekend a welcome break

Earlier this month we teamed up with the National Long Term Survivors Group (NLTSG) to host a residential weekend in Perthshire.

The weekend was aimed at people who have recently been diagnosed with HIV and those who are still coming to terms with their diagnosis. Living with HIV can have a huge impact on self confidence and can lead to social isolation – the purpose of the weekend was to help people know that they are not alone and that support is available.

The Bield at Blackruthven was a beautiful setting for the weekend, creating a welcoming, safe atmosphere where our 10 guests could talk openly, share experiences and make new friends.

Over the course of the weekend, everyone had the opportunity to take part in a range of workshops looking at different practical and emotional aspects of living with HIV.  These covered topics including sex and relationships, disclosing HIV status to friends and family and developing supportive networks.

We have had some great feedback from the people who came on the weekend. Some of the comments have focused on having a more positive outlook on the future and others have expressed relief at knowing they are not alone.

We are grateful to the NLTSG for their support organising the weekend and training us up to take this forward as a Waverley Care project in future.
