Chinese Health Project

Our Chinese Health Project worker, Benny Cheng, works with local people and groups in Lanarkshire and Glasgow to provide information about hepatitis B, and can help them to get tested, vaccinated and treated.

Benny also supports Chinese people to enjoy better health, by helping them to find and use local health services. This work is funded by the Lanarkshire Blood Borne Viruses Network in Lanarkshire, and Gilead in Glasgow.

Waverley Care's Chinese Health Project has been working with Chinese communities in Lanarkshire since December 2017. In Summer 2021, we're delighted that the project will be expanded to work with communities in Glasgow.

Glasgow is home to Scotland’s largest Chinese population, with over 10,500 identifying as Chinese in the last census. The move to expand the project into the city is an exciting opportunity to work with members of the community, supporting them to be hep B aware, to access testing and treatment if needed, and to overcome the cultural and language barriers that can make it difficult to access local healthcare services.

Part of the project’s success in Lanarkshire has been the recruitment of volunteer Community Health Ambassadors. These ambassadors share information about hep B and other common health issues in the Chinese community with local groups, and develop accessible information for this page.

The team recently got together to share their experience of volunteering with Waverley Care. Check out the Health Ambassador Programme tab below to learn more.
