Today is World Hepatitis Day

The ‘Big Red C’ campaign in Scotland is amongst the many activities happening across the world to mark World Hepatitis Day today.

In Scotland World Hepatitis Day helps raise awareness of the condition and is an opportunity to promote testing. Charitable organisations including ourselves, Hepatitis Scotland, Haemophilia Scotland and the Hepatitis C Trust are working alongside NHS boards to reach as many people as possible with awareness messages. More information on this year’s ‘Big Red C’ campaign, launched yesterday in Glasgow, can be found at www.HepCScot.org.  Look out for buses displaying the adverts and highlighting that Hepatitis C can be cured.

World Hepatitis Day is one of only four official world health days. Each year viral hepatitis kills 1.5 million people globally, and is the world’s eighth biggest killer.

Globally, World Hepatitis Day is coordinated by both the World Health Organisation and the World Hepatitis Alliance. In 2014 it received a great amount of support with 80% of countries across the world taking part through organising events and raising awareness.
