margaret.lance@waverleycare.orgI choose to work for Waverley care because I share their vision. HIV is a subject that I feel passionate about; I joined this industry to make a difference by adding my voice and contribution to the great work they do especially with the African Community.
Well, prior to joining Waverley Care, my first degree was teaching languages – English and French. I moved to the UK in 2005 and worked as a sexual health advisor with young people and adults. I later on went back to University – University of Edinburgh to Study Community Education 2009-2010.
What I enjoy most is the lovely people I meet on a daily basis who take the time to share their stories and life experiences with me. All those who pick up my calls, return my calls or stop by for a chat over a cuppa. It is very rewarding to go out talking to people about the amazing work that Waverley Care does supporting and reassuring people that HIV is a long-term manageable condition and no longer a dead sentence. It is far more rewarding taking services to people and working at their pace which gives me the opportunity to build trust and understand them better. Through my work, I have met some lovely people and have learnt so much from them as well.
In my spare time, I volunteer for various organisations and am a board member on some. I am an Elder at Glasgow Cathedral and was a Girls Brigade leader. I love walking, travelling, riding, jogging, socialising and sailing. I joined my husband on one of the largest sail training ships in the world to look after 30 Glasgow based cadets who were training. That is one of the benefits of volunteering. It was a fantastic experience. I also love the theatre and regularly visited our local Citizens and Tramway Theatre.
Great question. Many people have inspired me in different ways: my family, friends, and my coaches. My husband has been a great inspiration behind my work at Waverley Care and a great supporter at home; which gives me the drive to go even further. I am very fortunate, honored and proud of all the inspirational people around me
